He attended Queen Mary school in Chatham but finished his education in Leamington. He had returned to Chatham and was employed at the Chatham Glass Co. prior to his enlistment in 1941.  The brother of Frank of 40 Tecumseh Road and a sister Mrs. William Morton of William St., Chatham.

Wilfred trained at Toronto, Montreal, Trenton, Mont Joli and finally in Halifax.  It was reported in the CDN 20/05/44 that Wilfred married in May of 1942 in Montreal, PQ.,  prior to leaving for overseas that the time he was rated as Sgt.(AG).

It was also reported that Wilfred had been wounded in the head as a result of a German aircraft staffing of his airdrome and he had two pieces of shrapnel still there in the article, the wounding had effected his hearing in one ear but he was reported to be fit and returning to service. The CDN 20/05/44(P) reported that “On one patrol his plane was aloft for eight hours waiting for Nazi night raiders to clear away from the home field. Most of the crews he flew with were Australians”. 

Enlisted in Army April 17th, 1941. Applied for and was given transfer to R.C.A.F. August 4th, 1941. Trained at Manning Depot, #1 Wireless School, Montreal, Mont Joli, Quebec and Halifax. Went overseas and was stationed at Lossiemouth, Scotland and Coastal Patrol Duty. Was wounded in left side of head above ear, and was hospitalized two months. Rejoined crew and was stationed at Doncaster, Yorkshire, England. From there posted to Warrington, England and back to Canada with rank of Flight Sergeant. Instructed in Canada at several posts and promoted to Flying Officer (Air-Crew).

He was later promoted to the rank of Flt.Sgt. and Warrant Officer before being commissioned. Wilfred was 25 years old when he was promoted to Pilot Officer and was stationed at RCAF-Fingal as a turret gunnery instructor.

Discharged April 4th, 1945.
