V-J Day in London, England

Dear Mother and Dad.

Twice I have been on Times Square, New York City, for New Year’s Eve but today in London all that look like a deserted village. Such crowds, such noise. The city is really celebrating. As I picked my way from Trafalgar Square to Piccadilly Circus two old ladies in weird paper hats stopped me to demand, “Are you ‘appy at your work Canada?” People are singing, shooting off firecrackers, dancing and generally letting off steam. I have never seen anything like it before and never expect to see it again.

The sun is out now but this morning it was raining. From a good vantage point I saw the Royal Procession to Westminster. The Queen was a picture of charm and beauty apparently unconscious of the drizzle in an open carriage.

I was struck by the fact when the rain really pelted down small children ran to the “bobbies’ and took shelter under their capes. I saw four heads grinning out from under one cape.

Ran into Maurice Dobson and hour ago. He is just back from the continent. Today and tomorrow are holidays so I’ll not get back to Dishforth before Saturday at the earliest. No rush.

I wish you might see all this and hear the Abbey bells ringing their victory peals.

Love Harry
