Bowers, Floyd Merritt

 

Born 14/0/1918 in Wallaceburg the eldest son of Mrs. Eliza (Cooper) and the late Harry Bowers (accidentally killed in 1939) of 320 Wallace St., Wallaceburg, Ontario. Brother of William Frederick, AC2, RCAF at Brantford, ON. Floyd received his education in Wallaceburg graduating from the Wallacburg High School. Husband of Edna ‘Kay’ Kathleen (nee Cowley) Bowers of Chatham, Ontario.

Prior to enlisting, Floyd worked in the photography department at the Dominion Glass Co., Wallaceburg. He was an outstanding athlete in softball, hardball and basket ball. He was also the Scout Master at the First Baptist Church.  

Floyd enlisted in 1941 at London, ON with the London Fusillers. Floyd trained in BTC 12 in Chatham, Niagara –on-the-Lake, ON. and Vernon, BC with the Canadian Fusillers. It was reported in the CDN 17/06/42 that Floyd’s wife, Edna, was departing Chatham to join her husband in BC. before going overseas in September of 1942, first to England and then on to Italy.

KIA – Date of Death: 19/12/1943, in Italy, near Otona. Floyd was killed by an enemy sniper.  

Citation: 1939-45 Star, Italy Star, Defence Medal, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and clasp, War Medal 1939-45.

The WN 6/01/44(P) reported that the community demonstrated their sympathy with a minutes silance at a public meeting for municipal nominations. The flag at the Dominion Glass Co. was lowered to half-mast and a floral remembrance was placed at the plant main gate in his honour.
