Born in Ridgetown, ON., the son of Mr. and Mrs. Ward Buller of Beechwood, Kent Co., ON. He was married and had a son Richard who was six weeks old when he went overseas.

Enlisted with the Royal Canadian Regt. 8/01/1940 the 417th when he was aged 19 years. Jonathan went overseas on 3/08/1940 with the RCR and then was transferred to the Divisional Signal Corps. He saw action in “Operation Husky”; the invasion of Sicily and in invasion of Italy attached to the 1st Anti-Tank Regt. with the 8th Army.  At some point, he suffered “battle fatigue” (now loosely called a nervous breakdown) and was hospitalized at Alexandria, Egypt. From there, he was sent to hospital in England and finally, by hospital ship “Lady Nelson”, he was returned to Canada. He arrived in Montreal, PQ. in March 1944 CDN 11/04/44.

Clare was reunited with his wife and son in April CDN 11/04/44. In May of 1949 they had a daughter 9/05/1949. 

TH10/02/44: “Mrs. J.C. Buller received word last week that her husband (…), a member of the 1st Anti-Tank gun regiment was in a hospital in Italy suffering from nervous breakdown and loss of memory. Buller went overseas in July 1940 as a member of the RCR.”

TH13/04/44: Ranked: Sigmn. “(…) who went overseas in July 1940 with the RCR and who had a nervous breakdown in January followed by treatment in Alexandra, England and in Montreal arrived in the village Friday with his wife and child, who had been with him in Montreal since his arrival in Canada on the hospital ship ‘Lady Nelson’. He is visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ward Buller at Beechwood.”
