Resident Wallaceburg

Born and lived in Wallaceburg. The son of Mrs. James Campbell of 18 Duncan St., Wallaceburg, ON. The Wallaceburg News 17/10/40 reported that Mrs. Campbell was living at 437 Creey St. in Wallaceburg. He was a student of the Wallaceburg High School CDN 18/12/44.

William enlisted in late 1939. He was the first man from Wallaceburg to enlist in the second world war.  He went overseas that same year. The WN 17/10/40 reported that Cpl. Campbell had been wounded in action and was invalided to “somewhere in England” for treatment and recovery. His mother had received a letter from William that indicated that he had been wounded in the arm and that was healing fine. He was expected to rejoin his unit upon recovery.

 After some time in England he went to North Africa with the RCASC and from there to Sicily and Italy.

Pte. Campbell was the first veteran of the First Division to return home on a thirty-day leave. CDN 16/12/44 Pte. Campbell’s wife and mother were living at 18 Duncan St., Wallaceburg. CDN 18/01/45. William also had a sister Mrs. Walter Lawrence who lived in Wallaceburg; just south of the P/M railway station where he arrived on a Christmas furlough.

He had been through the Sicillian and Italian campaigns with the 1st Canadian Division Army Service Corps.
