Born in Hamilton, ON. 28 June 1913. He resided in Chatham as a public school teacher prior to his enlistment.  Next of kin reported as Mrs. Mary Blanche Chatterton, 16 Willowmac Ave., Chatham, ON. (his wife).  William held a BA degree from the University of Western Ontario when he joined the Canadian Army with the rank of Captain 2 July, 1940.

CDN.422 Served with the Kent Regiment M.G. 1936 to 1940.

William served in Canada for four years. He was on loan to the British Army and was attached to the Queens Royal Regiment. He then served in England Normandy, Belgium, Holland and Germany, and then mobilized as Lieutenant and became Captain then Major and reverted back to Captain. Was awarded the 1939 to 1945 Star, the France and Germany Star and the C.V.S.M. and Clasp.

Captain Chatterton was reported arriving in Chatham along with Mrs. Chatterton on the way from New Westminister, BC, where he was serving with the First Kent Regiment on his way to RMC, Kingston, ON. for a three month course CDN 17/08/42.

The CDN 22/05/43 reported that the Captain and Mrs. Chatterton had arrived in Chatham after being stationed to the west coast with the First Kents Regiment (Active). The CDN 3/06/43 reported that after a fortnight leave Capt. Chatterton was returning to the west while Mrs. Chatterton was remaining in Chatham.

It was reported in the CDN 4/04/44 that Major Chatterton arrived home from the west coast to spend a few days with his wife and son.

The CDN 29/04/44(P) reported that Major Chatterton of the Canadian Infantry Corps had volunteered for service with the British Army one of a group of officers being loaned by the Canadian Army. Major Chatterton has voluntarily reverted his rank to Captain to get overseas.

Reported arriving from overseas duty aboard the transport S.S. Nieuw Amsterdam, arriving at Halifax, NS. CDN 2/10/45.

Discharged November 12th, 1945.
