Regimental number: 33040 Reference: RG 150, Accession 1992-93/166, Box 1777 – 15, Item: 104590, PDF:- B1777-SO15.  Date of Birth 04/04/1892. Born in London, England. Next of Kin: at enlistment Rose Augel of 90 West St., Chatham, ON. Frederick was listed as living at 209 Colborne, St., Chatham, ON.

Trade: Painter. Single. Previous Military was with the 14th Field Artillery in UK. Was serving in the 24th Kent Regt., Chatham. Attestation 23/09/1914 at Valcartier, PQ. Age; 22 years, Height: 5’9”, Girth: 36 ½”, Complexion: Dark, Eyes, Brown, Hair: Brown. A Tatto on left arm of a “Cow Girl”. Medical 5/09/14 at Valcartier – “Fit”. Married to Mrs. J. M. Blary, 11 Strade Road, Fulham Cross, London, England S. W.        

Member of XIV Field Ambulance R.C.M.C.,that left Chatham for Long Branch camp on 18/08/1914. Was one of five Chatham-Kent men selected for overseas service while at Long Beach. Chatham Daily Planet 24/08/1914. Embarked for England from Quebec aboard the S.S, Cassauda 4/10/14.  

Frederick served in France arriving in France in Sept. 1915 with the 2nd Field Ambulance, 1st Batt. While in France he was given 5 days ‘field punishment’ for ‘ prejudice of good order and military discipline”. 25/09/15 with the 2nd Field Ambulance. 13/12/15 granted a 7 day leave.

Private Frederick P. Clay left for overseas September 29th, 1914, and went into training at Salisbury Plains, crossing to France February 10th, 1915. He was attached to the 2nd. Canadian Field Ambulance, but transferred to the 1st. Canadian Infantry Battalion, October 10th, 1915.

1/02/16 Frederick received a GSW to his right arm. Taken to No.26 Gen. Hospital – Estaples. Discharged 6/03/16.  He was hospitalized at Taplow for 7 days, Bromley for 11 days, the entrance wound was below the angle of the Scapule and exited inside of his arm  He would also be wounded 16/05/19 in the shoulder w/ Sepula.    

While dressing a wound comrade, Private Clay received a bullet wound in the right shoulder, January 22nd, 1916, and after treatment at the Stationary Hospital Estaples, France, was sent to Ramsgate Hospital, England. While stationed here a bomb, launched from a German Taube, struck the Hospital, and with difficulty Private Clay escaped. He was sent to Sandling for further training, and later placed on the staff of the Pay and Records Office, London, England.

December 26th,1917, He was married.

26/05/1919 he was at Camp Kimmel Park. Returned  to Canada from Liverpool aboard the S.S, Baltic.
