Born 29/01/1914 at Wallaceburg, ON.

Chester was playing professional hockey in England and Scotland with the Glasgow Mohawks of the Scottish League.  and living at 48 Hendham Rd., S.W.17 Wandsworth, London, England when the war brokeout in 1939. Beside his hockey he was also employed at essential war work in an munitions factory, (professional hockey didn’t pay that well at the time), in Birmingham, Solihill, England prior to his enlistment in the Canadian army at Aldershot, Kent, England in 1944.

A Brief History of Hockey in the UK pre WWII:-

Ice hockey was payed since the early 20th century in England, actually Britian was a founding member in 1908 of the World governing body the IHF (International Ice Hockey federation. The first recorded game ws played between Oxford and Cambridge the 16th of March, 1900, Oxford won 7 – 6.

The sport was big in the 1930’s with the opening of indoor arenas in Wenmbly, Harringay and Earls Court. The teams were staffed almost entirely by Canadian professionals several going on to play in the NHL. Chester’s team the Glasgow Mohawks (1933-39) were league champions in 1936 and 1937.The league suspended play during the war.

His discharge certificate indicates he was with the 2nd Canadian Infantry Training Regt. Stationed in the United Kingdom for training he then served in France and Germany. Honourably discharged on 23/07/1946 at Wolsely Barracks, London, ON.
