Don was an air traffic controller at Goose Bay Labrador, a hub for Ferry flights of aircraft to the United Kingdom, and for flight crews returning to Canada on leave. Many of those flights had to contend with strong head winds and they would use up fuel at an accelerated rate. A story in the RIN 5/11/2014 recalled those days. “Numerous times while still well out over the Atlantic, the first of the four motors would shut down. When the pilot reported in, all Don could do was to say ‘keep coming, you’ll make it. Then over a period of time each of the motors would shut down. All he could say was to keep coming. As they were losing altitude on the last engine, the pilot would radio. “we’re hitting the deck. Good-bye and good luck. “The silence.”
