A letter appeared in the Tilbury Times, 22/01/42 to the Tilbury IODE chapter as follows:

England, Dec. 7, 1941.

Dear Mrs. McLean:

Today I have received a Christmas parcel from the I.O.D.E. and being young enough to be curious especially when it comes to parcels, I had to open it at once. Your gloves and I might say they fit perfectly, were a real soldiers gift. Please accept my thanks and wishes for your Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Things are very dark this winter I know, but we are all certain of final victory and can only hope that next Christmas finds us all at home once more. Meanwhile it is the comforts and gifts of the folks at home that keep us in cheerful spirits. I cannot divulge our location but our prospects of a good Christmas here are very bright. The good fellowship of our English friends and the knowledge of the backing of the folks at home make things very pleasant for us over here.

Thanking you again,

L-Cpl. W. R. Escott, C-30238
