Walker Fleming

 

The son of  Mr. and Mrs. A. A. Fleming of Windsor, ON. He attended the Chatham Collegiate Institute. Prior to the war Walker was employed by the Union Gas Co. in Chatham, ON. and he was an officer in the Kent Regt., 2IC – ‘B’ Coy. He married Lt. Bonnie Barton (Holmes) who was in the service with the CWAC on CDN 30/10/39.  

Lieut. Walker was one of the first officers in the First Kents to enlist for active service. Given a hardy send-off in the officer mess of the Kent Regt., Col. T. E. Codlin referred to Lt. Fleming as “one of their best officers”  and “While we are sorry to lose him, we are pleased that he has been able to secure a good appointment in the 1st Hussars from London; he was one of the first officers to enlist for ‘active service’. He goes with the wishes of the regiment for best luck.” 

Captain Fleming was on leave from Niagara-on-the-Lake to spent the weekend with Mrs. Fleming and a Mrs. A. F. Henry at “Starfield”. CDN 27/02/42.

Major Fleming transferred to the 1st Hussars, London, ON.

The Captain was reported in the CDN 17/11/42 arriving from Terrace, BC. for a four day leave with Mrs. Fleming and his parents Mr. and Mrs. A. A. Fleming before leaving for Kingston, ON where he was to take a three month course.

The CDN 15/03/44((P) reported that Walker Harland Fleming one of the first officers of the first Kent Regt. to have enlisted at the outbreak of the war had been promoted to the rank of Major. “His wife Lieut. Bonnie Holmes-Fleming” was attached to the CWAC stationed at St. Anne de Bellevue, PQ.

He was wounded in Belgium  CDN19/10/44(P). According to a message received by his wife Lieut. Bonnie Fleming then stationed at CWAC at St. Anne de Bellevue, PQ., Major Fleming has received injuries to his back while serving in Belgium. He was reported recovering in an English hospital.  He was reported returning from overseas duty in the CDN 22/06/45. The CDN 22/06/45 reported that he was arriving the morning of the 22nd in London, ON. and in Chatham that evening.

Walker and Bonnie had a child born in December, 1951. CDN 19/12/51
