Resident Chatham

Born in Bristol, England. The son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Hammett. He came to Chatham  in 1913. He had served in the Great War serving for four years with the Canadian Engineers. For the past four years he had been on the staff  at No.12 BTC – Chatham having enlisted in December 1940. CDN Sep.44

Husband of Mabel Flossie. (nee Gaskell) Hammett, of Chatham. He was living at 67 Pine St., Chatham with his wife.  He was the father of two daughters Mrs. Fred Antram of Toronto and Miss Phyllis Hammett at home.  He had a brother Jack of Bristol.

Cpl. W. J. Hammett, age 51 was aboard the CPR train when he suffered a heart attack and passed away between Glencoe and Chatham.

Date of Death:  29 September, 1944 Age:51. Interment was at Maple Leaf Cemetery, Chatham.
