Buck married Gladys E., a Scottish lass in 1941 and before going to the continent he sent his wife and young son Larry to Canada to live with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. James Haskell in Port Alma. The MS (1944 date unknown) reported that Gladys E. and son Larrie Richard had arrived  and were staying with the Haskells’ at Port Alma. Glady reported that Red Cross was very helpful, giving them food, asking if they were well and seeing that they were on the correct train as far as Toronto.

She was surprised to see homes without ‘black-out curtains’, was thrilled to have ice cream and enjoyed her first chicken dinner in four years, and fresh fruit which she had not enjoyed in a long time. She noted that the weather was warmer than in the British Isles.
