Born 1/07/1918 in Wallaceburg. Son of William Richard and Louella Maude (Lague) Hewer, of 217 Nelson St., Wallaceburg, Ontario; husband of Dorothy M. (nee Robb) Hewer, of Wallaceburg. He received his education at D. A. Gordon School and Wallaceburg High School. Prior to enlisting Jack was employed for five years at the Wallaceburg Brass Co.

The 13th of August, 1940 Jack enlisted in the 1st Kent Regt. and trained in Chatham at BTC # 12, London, Halifax, Niagara then to New Westminister and Terrace BC. The WN 12/09/40 Jack was one of seven Whitebread ‘Soldier Boys’ who had enlisted with the Kent Regt. in Chatham.  The WN 24/10/42 reported that Jack was taking an N.C.O. course along with Manley Fraleigh, they were both reported home on leave.

The Wallaceburg News, 6/02/41 reported Jack was at Queen’s Park, London, ON. when he was given a week-end leave to visit his parents home. He had the company of Manley Fraleigh on the way home who was also at Queen’s Park. The WN 20/02/41 reported that Jack’s parents had received word that their son had arrived at Niagara-on-the-Lake after leaving Halifax. “While enroute from Halifax, NS. through Quebec  in 10 below zero weather was experienced and at Niagara 4 inches of snow.”

The WN 14/08/41 the family of Pte. Hewer received information that he had arrived in Halifax, NS. after an enjoyable cross country trip.

Pte. Hewer was reported at Niaagara-on-the Lake when he was granted a 48 hour leave to visit his parents. WN 8/01/42 Jack was home again for a week-end from London. WN 22/05/41 Jack was reported home on a five day furlough with his parents. WN 18/12/41

He transferred to the Essex Scottish and went overseas with the Regt leaving for England 31/03/1943.

The WN 23/03/44 reported that Cpl. Henderson was serving on ‘active duty’. The WN 3/08/44(P) reported that he went to France with the Essex Scottish. A letter received by his parents he referred to the “intensive artillery fire”.

Age: 25, DOW –  Date of Death: 18/07/1944, in France, at Eterville, near Caen.
