The son of James A. and Florence Holmes, his twin brothers David and Walter both serving in the Essex Scottish and both were wounded in the Dieppe Raid of August, 1942.

The DT 24/08/42 reported that Oliver was stationed at BTC No. 12 – Chatham.

Overseas with the Canadian Army five months in 1943. Returned to Canada as under-aged. He had spent his 16th, birthday in England.  Discharged 1943.

On return and discharge from Canadian Forces, enlisted in the U.S. Navy in May, 1943, being discharged in 1949.
