Born in Chatham, ON. in 1914, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs Ross Huff, the brother of Mack. James lived all of his young life in Chatham. Prior to enlisting James worked at the local plant of Canadian Industries Ltd.

He enlisted in 1941 with the Essex Scottish after being a Lieutenant in the Kent Regt. prior to the war. James went overseas in December 1941 with the Essex Scottish and he was promoted to the rank of Captain 25 March,1942.

Married Married to Frances Katleen (nee Burton) six months before going overseas of 5 Park Lane, Chatham, ON. Reported as MIA on the Dieppe Raid in the Windsor Star of 16 September, 1942 and the CDN 17/09/42(P). Mrs Huff was living at 5 Park Lane, Chatham,  received word that her husband was missing in action while she was vacationing in Gaspe, she quickly returned to Chatham with their young daughter, who Captain Huff had yet to see, to await further news. WS 19/09/42.

The good news was that Captain Huff was not a fatality at Dieppe but was a Prisoner of War and would remain in a POW camp until he was liberated 3/06/1945 almost three years after that assault on the French beach. CDN 18/09/42. For bravery in battle Captain Huff was awarded the Military Cross for “Skill, Courage and devotion to duty during the invasion at Dieppe”.

“In all 14 Chatham men were killed or captured at Dieppe.” J. Rhodes – CTW 6/08/2008.

The CDN 12/06/45(P) reported that Captain Huff had returned to Canada aboard a Navy destroyer arriving in Halifax about 5 June, 1945 and was met by his wife in London on the 11th of June.

James Ross Huff passed away 28/02/1985 in Chatham, ON.
