James, Reginald

 

The son of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur James of Hilliard Street, Chatham.  Next of kin reported as Mrs. Margaret Ruth James (nee Smith) of 55 ½ Lansdowne Ave., Chatham, ON. his wife.

Reginald had enlisted in 1942 and after training in London, Kitchener and Camp Petawawa had gone overseas two years ago. His son Ronald was only five days old when he left for overseas, Mom and son were living at 197 Stanley Ave., Chatham.

Trained at London, Kitchener and Petawawa. Went overseas in January 1943 and served in England, North Africa, Belgium, Holland, Sicily, Italy, France. Was wounded in Italy.

The CDN Feb. 1943(P). L/ Brd. James was reported arrived “safely overseas”. His wife was relieved. Reginald trained at London, Kitchener and Camp Petawawa.   

The CDN 5/01/45 reported that Gnr. James was reported to been ‘slightly wounded’ while in action in Italy. He had served in North Africa, Sicily and had seen action at Ortona. Cassino and Rome campaign’s.  A brother-in-law Ernest Cecil Smith was wounded in France shortly after D-Day and was stationed in England as an instructor 

Reported returning from overseas duty on the Ile de France, expected to dock at Halifax NS., 1-2 October, 1945. CDN 29/09/45.   

Discharged November 14th, 1945.

Found in the IODE Books of Remembrance, Chatham Museum.

Reported deceased 9 Sept., 2008, in the Legion magazine.
