Major W. S. Sutherland, padre of the Carleton & York Regt. in a letter to his wife Gladys, then living in Simcoe, ON., gave the following description of the action “Eddie” was in when killed. As follows:

“Your husband was among those who made an attack on a strongly defended enemy position and although successful a few, among whom was your husband, were killed.

It may be of some consolation to you to know that your husband did not suffer, but died instantly. You can also be proud of the part he played, as he advanced up a very steep mountain in rain, over heavy clay, and the objective had almost been reached.

He lies in a pleasant orchard by the side of the road where he fell. With him are those of his comrades who died with him. You have my deepest sympathy in your loss and my sincerer prayer is that God may bless and keep you and yours.”

Besides the padre’s letter Mrs. Jewiss received a letter from Pte. Bill Peacock of Toronto who was a close friend of Edmund in the Carleton & York who wrote:

“No doubt by now you have heard from the war office about your husband. I wish to extend my heart-felt sympathy. At the time of his passing I was away from him and it wasn’t until later that I found out.

There is a story connected to your husband which, I figure should help ease the pain. It made me very proud when I heard it. There were some trapped by Germans who wouldn’t let them out, and they asked for volunteers to go and rescue the lads, and you husband volunteered without hesitation. The Colonel is a Queen’s Own (Rifles) man from Toronto and I spoke to him, and he said it was a very noble of your husband, and he says it will always be remembered by the battalion.”

The newspaper source and date of the two above letters is unknown. JRH.
