MEDICALLY UNFIT for GENERAL  SERVICE.  –  Medical History of Invalid.  Date of Birth: 02/07/1876 at Bothwell, Kent Co., ON., the son of Sarah Jane Moisley of Bothwell. Peter was a single painter living at 230 Ave. “E” N., Saskatoon, Sask. At some point in time he had served 3 years in the 21st Bn. In Windsor, ON. Attestation: 20/01/1916 in Saskatoon, Sask.  To the 65th Bn.

“Unfit for F.G.S. – Theatre: 14/08/16. 1916 Jan. 31 – from Feb to June – Unit Sailed 18/06/16. Arrived in England 28/06/16 – S/S. Empress of Britain 12/08/16 – Proceeded Overseas 13/08/16.

London, ON. – 27/08/18 : Height 5’ 6” , Weight:  133 #, “Scar below inner Candyle on left arm – 2” long outer left arm. 2scars upper and outer surfaces left thigh. While serving 65th to 54th Batt. – Inguinal Hernia Rt. (2) S. W. – Arm Left (2) – Deafness (3) Inguinal Hernia (4) Pain at left forearm – ‘must wear a truss – from Hospital in France and in England – Recommendation: Category (C111.) – 5 pages.

Private Peter James Johnston arrived in England June 28th, 1916; was transferred to the 54th Canadian Battalion, July 2nd, 1916, and proceeded to France with the 4th Canadian Division August 12th, 1916.

Deafness Report: – GSW Left Arm – in France,  1/04/17 – Age 42 years, 54th Bn. Arm and Back – Trans to Moore Barracks – 23.07.17 – “Many fragments  of metal  – fair size fragments. 24/03/1943.  – Medically Unfit for service. – RO. 668 d/14/06/18  (“Cat 111”) – 27/02/20 – Disc 6/09/1918 – Disc. Section Reservation referred  $ 64.00. Assigned Pay. – Age 43 yrs. “Scars GSW left eye – Date of Discharge: 6/09/18 at London, ON. Last Pay Certificate: $202.00. Monthly stoppage at $15.00 and $5.00 to date discharge 

Post Discharge – Pay 65th Bn. of $190.10 3rd Payment carried forward to new pay list.         

Peter went overseas in June of 1916 and was at the front in August of 1916 with the 4th Bn. The Bothwell Times of 30 November, 1916 reported that “Pte. P. J. Johnston, reported wounded by a gun shot in the eye 5th November, 1916”, in a telegram dated 24th November, 1916. The article goes on to say that Peter is the brother of Mrs. W. S. Beamish and S. A. Johnston a Flour and feed merchant in Bothwell. His father Mr. William Johnston was deceased. Peter was given a medical discharge from the army 6/09/1918.
