The son of William H. and Margaret Johnston of Dresden. The brother of Lorne, Earl and Keith and sisters Mrs. Gordon Wees, Mrs. Cecil Carrell of Dresden and Mrs. Leslie Carr of Camden Twsp.

Roy enlisted in the RCAF 8/12/1941 trained in Canada and received his ‘Wings’ at Malton, ON. in the spring of 1943 and left for overseas in October of 1943. He was assigned to RAF 115 Squadron where he completed thirteen missions before being shot down over Germany. He spent seven months as a POW at Sagan Luft III and at Luckenwald.

The DN 25/07/45 reported that F/O. Johnston who had recently been repatriated from a German prison camp was leaving for Toronto to report for duty. He had been a his parents home after returning to Canada.

Roy was discharged from the RCAF 14/09/45.

After thirteen completed missions, Flying Officer Johnston’s plane was shot down over Germany. Taken prisoner of war, interned seven months at Sagan Luft Three and Luckenwalde, Germany.
