John enlisted in the R.C.N.V.R. serving as a signalman on HMCS Mansfield and later on HMCS Wasaga, a Bangor Class minesweeper. The Wasaga was one of the fleet of ships patrolling and sweeping mines off the coast of Normandy on 6 June, 1944 in preparation for the D-Day invasion. After the war the war John returned to the family farm. A lifelong bachelor, John work the farm with his father Herb and brother George. With Georges death in 1966, John stayed on which he and George’s wife Irene share cropped with their neighbour.

John died Wednesday 3 November, 2010 at the Village Nursing Home in Ridgetown, ON. John was to be inducted into the Kent Agricultural Hall of Fame on the 16th of November. Internment was in Gosnell Cemetery, Orford Township.
