Private William James MacMillan left for overseas with the 92nd Highlanders May 17th, 1916, training at East Sandling until the middle of July 1916, when he proceeded to France transferring to the 42nd Highlanders. He passed through the Somme and other important engagements unscratched, until December 17th, while serving in support trenches at Vimy Ridge he was severely wounded in the right leg. He received three months treatment in No.2 Canadian General Hospital, Le-Treport, two months in Royal Victoria Hospital, Netley, and two months convalescence in Bearwood, being invalided to Canada July 21st, 1917, arriving at Halifax August 1st, 1917.

Private William James MacMillan received his honorable discharge December 31st, 1917, in consequence of being wounded in the right leg and rendered physically unfit for further military service.
