Rank Nursing Sister, Lieutenant

Born in Chatham, ON. 17/08/1891. RG 150, Accession 1992-93/166, Box 5983-49, Item: 136191, PDF B5983-S049. She was reported living at 523-25th Ave. West, Calgary, AB. Next of Kin: J. A. Martin of Veteran, her father.

Irene enlisted 13/02/1918 in Calgary, an had a Medical Exam and she was considered “Fit”. She served in Canada and in England arriving in England 25/03/18 and returned to Canada 5/05/1919.  Lieut Martin served in only England 25/03/18 after serving in Canada. She arrived 5/06/19 England 25/03/18 and returned to Canada 5/06/1919. She was hospitalized with “Pain in her abdomen – the pains became more severe in the lower right Abdomen pains from ‘moderate’ to ‘extreme.’ Pain became more severe. Eating slowly did not stop. She had contracted Bronchitis – Appendicitis. Debility post operation required at least 6 months – she was returned to hospital in Canada. She departed to Canada on a HMAT departing 5/05/19.

While in England she served at Canadian Red Cross Hospital at Buxton, Terrace Road, Devonshire 18/02/19.  The Grenville Canadian Special Hospital, Ramsgate, Kent, England, which opened in November 1915 to treat Canadian soldiers suffering from Neurasthenia (aka: Shell Shock) NS. Martin was there 19/03/1919. 

NS Martin was ill a number of times while on service. She had appendicitis 18/12/18 at the Kitchener Military Hospital – Brighton, England. Bronchitis at the same hospital, discharged 17/04/18. In March of 1919 she was deemed “Unfit for any service after six months and returned to hospital in Canada.

She returned to Canada 5 May, 1919 and was SOS (Struck Off Strength aka discharged) as Medically Unfit.  9/01/1920 – Medically unfit for service.
