ON.  Prior to enlisting he was teaching high school in Leamington, ON. He also had a sister living at home in Blenheim.

Hosp., ‘On the Thames – 8/08/17, West Can E & E Hops. – Discharge 8/08/17 – Adm.  to 83 Gen. Hosp. – Boulogne – June and 1917 (wounded severely to his forehead – and Eye – 28/06/17. Progressing satisfactorily – 28/06/17 – Rejoined unit: 22/04/17 – Mo. *3 – Gen. Hosp. – 2/06/17 . Severely Wounded to his forehead – GSY – Forehead – Discharged 8/08/17 – GSW anophtholmess. – CFA – France – 31/12/16

Gunner William Roswell McCamus went overseas November 15th, 1916, proceeding to France December 31st, 1916, attached to the 4th Section, 1st, Canadian Division Ammunition Column. He was later attached to the Trench Mortars about February 12th, 1917, to the 2nd Section 1st Canadian D.A.C. about March 8th, 1917, to the 5th Battery, 2nd Brigade C.F.A. about April 22nd, 1917.

ARV. – In England – S.S. Grampian – 5/11/16 to 8/11/16 – SOS – 1st Dac. – 29/12/16 – 9/05/17 to No. 12 Can. Field Amb. – 10/05/17 – No. 12 Can Field Amb. – 9/08/17 – No. 83 Gen. Hosp. 11/06/17 – 2nd Batt. King George Hospital, Staford St., – 26/07/17  to Discharge. Oct. 1917 – TOS – Buxton – Canadian. – 6/11/17 – Embarked for Canada from Liverpool. (MEDICALLY UNFIT). 15/12/17.       

He received wounds which resulted in the loss of an eye while at the guns to the right of Vimy village beside Lens-Arras Railway embankment June 1st, 1917, and was admitted to King George Hospital, London, June 5th, 1917. July 15th, 1917, he was transferred to Folkstone Westcliffe Canadian Eye and Ear Hospital, receiving treatment until August 8th, 1917. He was boarded for Canada in September, returning November 14th, 1917.

It was reported that he was returning from overseas duty in late November 1917 after being severely wounded in action which resulted in the loss of an eye.  Gunner William Roswell McCamus received his honorable discharge December 15th, 1917, being unfit for further military service.
