Born 23 July, 1918, the son of Herman Whitfield  and Sarah ‘Jane’ (nee Douglas) McKnight.   The brother of Clarence Harold A59756 and Gordon Floyd A103214.

Alvin enlisted in the 1st Kent Regt., 6 August, 1940. The Wallaceburg News 26/06/41 reported that Alvin had a week-end leave with his parents.

The WN 1/07/43 reported that Sgt. Alvin had arrived safely overseas joining his brother L/Cpl. Clarence who was serving with rhe Provost Corp. and brother Gnr. Gordon serving in the 8th Army Field Regt. who had been in England “some months ago.” 

Alvin was repatriated from England to hospital in London, ON. to recuperate from a motorcycle accident while in England in 1944. His left arm was in a sling for months. His daughter Sharon Burke said that he also had a metal plate in his head also from the accident. He was discharged “unable to meet the required Military Physical Standards”. 18/11/44 (Discharge Certificate)

After the war Alvin was a car salesman for Dawe Motors in Wallaceburg, ON. Later in life he was the Bailiff and Sherrif in Wallaceburg. He married Simone (nee Vermeersch) in 1945 and had five children; Mary Jane (Currah), Sharron (Burke), Brenda (Brown) Alana (Houle) and Wendy Edwards).

Alvin then living at R.R.2 Tilbury, passed away 3 June, 1981 in St. Joseph’s Hospital, Chatham, at the age of 62 years. Burial in Riverside Cemetery, Wallaceburg, ON.
