The citation describing the action in which Flt. Lieut. Won his award was given as follows:

“This pilot has completed many outstanding tactical and photographic reconnaissance sorties. On all of his missions he has produced excellent results, regardless of enemy opposition from anti-aircraft defences and fighter aircraft. In April 1945, F-L Middleton, while on tactical reconnaissance duty in the Lunenburg area, destroyed an attacking Focke Wolf 190, while other aircraft of his section was obtaining information required by the 2nd Army. He has always displayed the utmost keenness and has proved himself a first class leader.”

Reported returned to Canada aboard the S.S. “New Amsterdam” which docked at Halifax 30 Sept., expected to arrive in Chatham the 29th of September, 1945. CDN26/09/45.
