Reaume, Herman Alfred

Previous Military Experience… None

The son of Alfred and Annie May (nee Brown).

History After Enlistment… Trained at the Signalling School at Vimy Barracks, Kingston. Went overseas in August 1940 and while in England was buried three times during the robot bombings of 1944 but escaped injury each time. Served in England five years.

It was reported in the TT 22/01/42 that Herman was attached to No.1 Signals at Canadian Military Headquarters, Canadian Army Overseas.

It was important to service personnel serving overseas in particular to maintain contact with family and community back in Canada. The IODE (Imperial Order Daughters of the Empire) began providing ‘comfort packages’ to the 1st Canadian Contingent in 1914 and continued to do so during WWII. Herman appreciated this as is shown in his letter:

Lt. Patrick Wilson Chapter IODE.

To Catherine Archer,

Received your parcel yesterday and was very happy to get it.

It was one of the best parcels I have ever seen and it had everything in it. Thanks a million. Your parcel really made me happy. You see I live out and all the canned goods, tea and things will come in very handy.

I am giving you my right address and please forward my things to this address.

Yours truly,

Herman A. Reaume.
