The son of Fred and Ida Shafer of 82 Landsdown Ave., Chatham, ON. He attended public school at St. Joseph RC School and high school at Chatham Vocational School. After suffering an accidental broken leg during his training with Essex Scottish Reg. he was invalided home arriving in New York City in March of 1944. CDN 14/03/44.
Transferred to the Essex Scottish Regiment after the Battle of Dieppe. Served overseas four years and was in England most of this time. Received a broken leg during manoeuvers in England.
