Son of Agnes and Edgar Sherman of  Thamesville. A painter. Not married, living in Thamesville. Attestation: 10/02/1916 at Chatham, ON. to 186th Bn. He had two sisters Elizabeth and Miae Agnes and brothers : David Edgar and James Stewart.

Reported to have died in an accident Jan. 1919 . CDP 1/02/19. Grave marker at Sherman Cemetery, Kent Co., ON. Information on grave site from Hans VanDerDoe, Thamesville.

Age: 28 yrs. 6 mths. Height: 5’ 5 ½” Girth: 36 ½ “, Complexion: Fair, Eyes: Blue, Hair: Light Brown, Weight: 150 #. Medical at Chatham, ON. “Fit’ . 3/02/16. 880026. 29 February, 16 to 1 Apr. 1917 with 186th Bn.

Shipped out aboard the S.S.Lapland departed for England 28/03/17. Arrived in England 7/04/17. He was overseas in France 4/08/17.

He came down with Scarlet Fever, he had Typhoid when he was 8 years old. Typhoid  It seems that William had more than usual medical issues. 16/01/18 he was admitted to 12 Cdn. Field Ambulance – Myalgiu. 19/01/18 he was admitted to No. 83 General Hospital – Boulugne, Fr. 2/02/18 he was admitted to 4th London  General Hospital, Denmark Hill. 5/03/18 he was transferred to #4 Cdn. Gen. Hosp – Baougo and from there on 27/03/18 to PPCRC ‘French Fever’ – BESHILL were he was discharged to service 14/06/18. He was admitted to No.4 Cdn. General Hosp. at Basing stoke in England an discharged 14/06/18. Admitted to C.C.C. Bramshott at  Basinstoke  Gen. Hosp. admitted. For observation.

26/06/18 William was admitted to the Military Hosp.  at Beshill – Discharged 14/06/18. 12 days later he was admitted to the Military Hosp. at Rondell St. WC. Suffering from Influenza – and on sick leave to 2/07/18.

9/10/18 William was admitted to the 7th Gen. Hospital for treatment for VDG and was cured 25/10/18 to B’logae.

He had served at home for 18 months and in the field for 6 months. 17/11/18 he was hospitalized for Gonorrhea (VDG) 

10/09/17 Had in the General Hosp. at Etaples for Influenza 17/09/18. Shortly after the the end of the War a Court of Inquiry opened 3/03/19.

Inquiring into the circumstances under which No. 880026, Pte. Sherman W. 18th Cdn. Bn. was injured at Duren on 21st. January, 1919 and whether any person was to blame and to report.

“Attempted to mount the train while it was in motion. He slipped and fell underneath the train. He was then taken to No. 17 C.C.S. at Duren. To far as I understand he was a passenger on the train. I have orders not to leave the train with out permission.”

Circumstances of Death of Pte. William Tecumseh Sherman.

Died whist attempting to jump on a train as it passed out of No.1 Platform, Duren Station at 2:41 on 21 January 1919, he fell beneath the train and was seriously injured. He was conveyed to No. 17 C.C.S., DUREN  where he died the same day from compound fracture of the thigh and right leg and left ankle.

His sister, Miss M. E. Sherman of Thamesville  received the Memorial Plaque and Scroll. Mrs. Sherman (mother) received the Memorial Cross. His ‘Will’ listed John Coutts also of Thamesville received the property described in the WILL.
