Born 20/09/1914 at Vancouver, B.C. Son of Alexander and Jeanie (Giffen) Smith of Sarnia, ON., brother of James (RCAF), Margaret (RCN), and Jane. Educated at Sarnia Collegiate and Technical Institute, Ontario Agricultural College – Guelph OAC.

Following his graduation from the Ontario Agriculture College in 1937 with a B.S.A. he worked for some time at Massey-Harris Co. in Toronto but returned to Guelph to teach physics at his alma mater. In 1938 a classmate at OAC contacted Alex to join him at a new company Greenmelk in Wallaceburg, which he did.

On 10/05/1940 Alexander enlisted in the RCAF in London, ON. After training in Toronto, Trenton, Jarvis, Rivers, MN., Malton, Summerside, PEI.

He went overseas in 1940. While serving with #72 Sqd. (RCAF) in the Red Hills area of Egypt, flying in a Blenheim bomber #Z7628 he perished with all crew members, there is no known grave for F/O Smith.

Age: 27 DOAA, Date of Death: 17/12/1941.
