Smyth Clarence Reginald

 

The only son of Norman James Smyth and Annie Myrtle Smyth, of 92 Joseph St., Chatham, Ontario, Canada. He was the brother of Mrs. Clare Scott of Charring Cross, Mrs. George Simmons of Amherstburg, Mrs. Larry McCart, Raleigh St., Chatham and Mrs. Bruce Clark (deceased). Clarence attended McKeough School and the Chatham Collegiate Institute and CVS. CDN 31/06/44(P). Prior to his enlistment he was working a Canadian Pacific Telegraph office. He also worked at the Dominion Sugar Co. in Chatham.

Clarence enlisted in the RCAF in July 1941 as a wireless Air Gunner. He trained at MacDonald, MB., Valcartier, PQ, Moncton NB., and Guelph, ON. he received his wings as a wireless operator air gunner at MacDonald MB.in September, 1942. He went overseas in November of 1942. He was promoted to Flight Sergeant.

Mr and Mrs. N. J. Smyth received distressing news that their son was reported missing after air operations. “Regret to advise that your son Flt. Sgt. R116935 is reported missing from air operations overseas August 10. Letter to Follow.

Age: 24, KIA – Date of Death: 10/08/1943.

On his 11th Operational flight in Halifax bomber # JD 257 on Air Ops. over Mannheim, Germany was lost with the rest of the crew.

Also serving on Halifax bomber JD 257 was FO. Charles A. Wright also from Chatham, ON
