Son of Mr. James B. and Bessie Spence of 168 Patteson Avenue, Chatham, ON.

P/O. Douglas Spence was reported on “a few days leave”, to visit his parents in Chatham. CDN 21/12/42.  He had undergone training at Kingston and Clinton.   

Before going overseas in 1943 Douglas had trained in Kingston and Clinton, ON.The CDN 16/12 43(P) reported that he had been promoted to Flying Officer. He had been overseas for a year. He trained at Kingston and Clinton

It was also reported that Flt. Lieut. Spence was engaged to Miss Elisabeth Peterman of Peterborough, ON a member of the C.A.W.C. CDN 6/02/45. and they were reported as married in August of 1945. CDN 2/08/45.

Previous Military Experience… Trained one month at #12 B.T.C.

History After Enlistment… Trained at Toronto, Took course in Basic Radio at Queen’s University, graduated first in class of 95 July 1942, and promoted to LAC. Posted to Clinton, and was commissioned at a P.O. Dec. 4th 1942. January 5th Posted overseas.

P/O. Douglas Spence was reported on “a few days leave”, to visit his parents in Chatham. CDN 21/12/42  TheCDN 17/02/43 who recently arrived oversea on active service.

Before going overseas in 1943 Douglas had trained in Kingston and Clinton, ON. 

 February 4th 1943 Posted as technical officer to R.A.F. at Newtonbutler, N. Ireland. was made commanding officer of that station March 1st 1943 and promoted to Flying Officer, in June. October 1st 1943 posted as technical officer to R.A.F. castlerock, N. Ireland. February 28th 1944 posted to R.A.F. at Sango, Cape Wrath, N. Scotland as technical officer. December 4th 1944. Promoted to Flight Lieutenant. January 30th 1945 Posted to R.A.F. Saligo Bay, Isle of Islay,

It was reported that F/O Spence had been promoted to Flt. Lieutenant 30/01/45. CDN 10/02/45(P).

The Hebrides, Scotland, as officer commanding the North Western chain comprising of three Radio Navigation Aid stations covering air and sea navigation for the North Western Atlantic Approaches. September 12th 1945.

It was also reported That Flt. Lieut. Spence was engaged to Miss Elizabeth Boorman of Peterborough, ON., a member of the C.A.W.C. CDN 6/02/45 and they were reported as married in August of 1945. CDN 2/08/45.   

Posted to R.C.A.F. Torquay for repatriation. October 21st 1945 Sailed for Canada. Received the Defence [sic]of Great Britain Medal the Canadian Voluntary Service Medal and Leaf and the Victory Medal.
