Regimental number: 400171 Reference: RG 150, Accession 1992-93/166, Box 9260 – 44, Item: 249298, PDF:- B9260-SO44. Date of Birth 15/03/1876 at Chatham, ON. Son of Robert & Jane Glover Steen, married to Elizabeth of 1237 – 11th Avenue West, Calgary, Alberta where he was living prior to the war. A member of the 17th CFA. Attestation: 1/05/1915 at Calgary, Alberta. CDP 03/07/18, 05/07/18, 6/07/18.

Apparent Age: 39 yrs. 1 Mth., Height: 6’ , Girth: 39 ½”, Weight: 178 #. Complexion: Fair, Eyes: Light Brown, Hair: Brown. Medical: 1/05/15 at Calgary, Alberta. “Fit”.

Robert arrived in England 5/09/15 aboard the S/S. Scandinavian.  

CAMC –THEATRE: France. Date of Service 1/02/16. 1 May, 1915 Forner Corps 17th Cdn. Field Amb. TOS: May to Aug. 1915  for overseas. Robert was plagued with gastric issues 3/07/16 to 11/07/16 he had Gastric Haemollage for eight days.  

22/07/17 Robert was granted a 10 Day leave. Returned from his leave 5/08/17. 

He suffered a Bout of Bronchitis 2/01 to 9/01/18. Tranferred to England. Transfer to Dudley Rd. Bramshaw Military Con. Epson, England.  4/01, 10/01, 23/01, 22/02/18 duration to recovery. SOS posted to CAMC – Shorncliffe. Discharged 22/02/18     

ROBERT ALEXANDER STEEN who died on June 27, 1918 (LAC) Service Number 400171, Age 47 Canadian Army Medical Corps Llandovery Castle Hospital Ship. Halifax Memorial, Halifax, Nova Scotia.

It is not clear if Pte. Steen was a patient or a Medic when the Hospital Ship HMS Llandovery Castle on route from Halifax, NS to Liverpool when the ship was torpedoed off southern Ireland 27 June, 1918. The sinking was the deadliest Canadian navel disaster of the war 234 doctors, nurses, CAMC Corp, soldiers and Seamen died in the sinking at the hand of U-86 

The Captain the subsought to destroy the evidence of the torpedoed. Only 24 people in one  lifeboat survived. They were rescued shortly afterwards by the destroyer HMS Lysander.

Mrs. Elizabeth Steen, Calgary, Alta. (Widow) Memorial Cross rec’d 18/02/21, Memorial Scroll: 15/Mar.,1921 and Memorial Plaque. 4/01, 10/01, 23/01, 22/02/18. Elizabeth did receive the Service Gratuity of $80.00.
