Resident Wallaceburg

The only son of Captain and Mrs. Calvin S. Stonehouse of Wallaceburg, the brother of Bonnie Lou and Margaret. Prior to his enlistment he was an all round athlete in rugby, basketball, softball, baseball, lacrosse and hockey.

Lou enlisted in the RCNVR in July 1941 as an Ordinary Seaman. He later attended King’s College in Nova Scotiaprior to his commission. He had been at sea for over a year after that.

The WN 8/07/43 reported on the marriage of sub-Lieut. LLewellyn Owen Stonehouse and Ruthe Kathleen (nee Bowers) at First Presbyterian Church. The couple left for points west. In October of 1943 Sub-Lieut. Stonehouse was given charge of a Fairmile sub-chaser with the RCN.   The CDN 18/09/43 reported that Mrs. Llewellyn Stonehouse took he departure for Halifax, NS. to join her husband.

The Wallaceburg News reported that Sub-Lieut. Stonehouse was stationed at H.M.C.M.L. c/o Fleet Mail Office, Halifax in 1944.  

The WN 25/10/45 reported that Lieut Stonehouse, navigating Officer aboard the HMCS Saskathewan that had been decommissioned. Lou was on a thirty days leave prior to being discharged from the Navy. WN.

After the war he attended the University of Toronto graduating in 1948 with a Bachlor of Commerce degree. While at university he remained on “non-active” duty with the Navy. He rejoined the RCN after graduation and retired as a full Navy Commander in 1969.

After his retirement from the Navy he moved back to Wallaceburg where he became Mayor.

Mayor Stonehouse passed away in April 1980.
