Born in Toronto, ON., he joined the Queen’s Own Rifles and St. John’s Fusiliers when he was in St. John’s NB working with the Union Bank. He received his commission in 1912 and enlisted in the Great War in 1914 with the 115th Batt. CEF.

He was overseas in 1916 with the rank of Major and in 1917 he was seconded to the Sixth Corps of the British Expeditionary Force. It was while he was a staff officer that he received the O.B.E (the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire) and a MiD (Mentioned in Dispatches)

Appears on the “Muster Roll” of the 2nd Bn., Kent Regiment (MG), N.P.A.N. (date unknown). Listed as Officer Commanding. A photo of Lt. Col. Thompson appeared in the CDN 25/04/42 meeting Col. S. A. Baxter, commanding officer of the 148th Infantry of the US Army who was visiting relatives in Chatham.

The CDN 15/08/45 reported that Lt. Col. W. G. Thomson OBE, ED, District Recruiting Officer of Military District 1 for the past two years was returning to civilian life at his request. After 35 years in the Army he was returning to the investment business in Chatham and Windsor 

He had been recalled from the Corps Reserve Officer’s in 1940 to command the 2nd Kent Regt. until his appointment as District recruiting Officer. He was also involved in the local committees in the district for war loan purposes in 1939-40.

Previous Military Experience… Served with a Reserve Unit from 1908. Served four and a half years in World War 1. Attached to the Kent Regiment (MG) to present enlistment.

History After Enlistment… Took command of 2nd Kent Regiment N.P.A.M. in August 1940 and was also on Administrative and training Staff. In 1943 was attached to Headquarters at Military District #1, London, and was district recruiting Officer till the end of the war. Received the O.B.E. and was mentioned in dispatches in World War 1 and received the Efficiency Decoration in the present conflict.

Date of Discharge… August 16th 1945
