The son of Mr. and Mrs. George Thornton of 328 Gillard St., Wallaceburg. He attended D. A. Gordon  public School an Wallaceburg High School.  William was married and the father of a daughter Marsha Joyce, living at 144 St.Clair St., Chatham. Prior to his enlistment William was employed at the Dominion Glass Co. in Wallaceburg.

William enlisted in September of 1939 with the 1st Hussars of London, ON. He had been overseas for three years after several months he was selected for a commission he made 2nd Lieut. and was made Lieutenant.  William went to France shortly after D-Day, with the 6th Cdn. Army Tank  Regiment.  He was wounded in the left shoulder, the left elbow and right leg on 15 August. He had been in hospital in England and at a recuperation center in the countryside. The News of his wounding was reported in the CDN 5/09/44   

His wife was notified that her husband would be returned to Canada as a casualty by hospital ship the date of arrival had not been announced. CDN 7/11/44. The CDN 23/11/44 reported that William had returned from overseas duty 

Previous Military Experience… None

History After Enlistment… After enlistment was stationed at Wolsely Barracks, London, Camp Borden and Kingston.Went overseas in November 1941 and was stationed in England until August 1944 when he went to France on D-Day with his Canadian Regiment. On the 15th of August he was wounded in the left shoulder, the left elbow and the right leg, and was hospitalized in England and in recuperating centres in that country.
