“Receives War Medal Son Won at Somme”

“Reeve A. A. Wilson of Tilbury, has just received from the British War Office the military medal which was awarded to his son, Lieutenant A. P. Wilson, for conspicuous bravery at the Battle of the Somme. September, 1916.

 

Curator’s Note:  The reference to “military medal” was in this case the Military Cross.

 Dave Benson, Curator of C-K Museum, reported he had acquired Lieut. Wilson’s Military Cross 1/05/2007.

The University of Toronto “Roll of Service 1914 -18” gives the following information on Lieut. A. P. Wilson. Arthur went overseas in May of 1916, joining the 1st Battalion of the CEF and arrived at the front lines in July for the Battle of the Somme 11/09/16.

“Where he commanded his platoon with great coolness and skill through heavy bombardment and forwarded information gained at great personal risk. Though temporarily blinded he was with difficulty induced to leave the trench.

On recovering from his injuries he was with the 4th Reserve Battalion during part of 1917, but returned to the front in October. After going through at Arras, when he was struck by a piece of shell while leading his men, and was rendered unconscious. Two days later he succumbed to his injuries in hospital. At Rouen where he was buried.”

Lieut. Patrick Wilson Killed in Action.

“Official word was received here yesterday from Ottawa that Lieut. Patrick A. Wilson was killed in action. Deceased was reported wounded a year ago, but returned to the front. He was also awarded a D. C. M. for bravery. He enlisted here two years ago in the 99th Battalion while completing a university course at Toronto. The sympathy of their many friends is extended to the bereaved parents Mr. and Mrs. A. A. Wilson. “

Brilliant Career Suddenly Closed.

“A brilliant career was brought to a distinguished close on Sunday September 1st when Lieut. Arthur Patrick Wilson, of the 1st Canadian Infantry Battalion, youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Andrew Wilson of this place, passed away at the 2nd British Red Cross Hospital, Rouen, France from wounds received in action.”

In November of 2014 he along with Lieut. Matthew Maurice ‘Sonny’ Wilson and 57 other law students, who put a promising law career aside to serve their country in the Great War were recognized with an honorary call to the bar from the Law Society of Upper Canada on Remembrance Day at Osgoode Hall. CDN 27/11/2014.
