Private McDermand went overseas Oct. 1 1916, proceeding to France in March.
In May he was severely wounded, and returned to England for treatment, joining his unit in France Nov. 5
He was again wounded Nov. 12 but remained on duty.
Dec. 12 1917, while holding the first lines, he was killed in aciton by a trench mortar.
