Earl was born in Essex County, Ontario to Henry McLaughlin and Jessie (McGregor) McLaughlin on October 16, 1895. In the 1911 census, he was living in Orford Township, Kent County with his father and step-mother Martha (Stone) McLaughlin, as his mother had died. He enlisted in the C.E.F. on January 24, 1916 at Kingsville, Ontario, served overseas in France and at Vimy Ridge, and attained the rank of Corporal. At various times, he served with the 23rd, 87th and 99th Battalions. He received his discharge in London, Ontario on August 17, 1919. He was married with two children and lived in Windsor. He died in Windsor on December 26, 1990 at the age of 95 years.
