Attestation- 25 July, 1915 (reported age 18 years, Actual birthdate: 30 May, 1900. Age 15 years.

Apparent Age:  15 yrs., Height – 5’ 6”, Complexion: Dark, Eyes: Brown, Hair:  Black.   Enlisted at Kingston, ON., Overseas with – 77th Battalion, Landed in France – 19 March, 1916. Transferred to 12th Battalion, Serving with 4th Canadian Mounted Rifles

DISTINGUISHED CONDUCT MEDAL

Gallantry & Distinguished Conduct Medal – Awarded 30 April, 1918.

For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during an attack. When his company was held up by rifle and Machine Gun fire from the vicinity of a ‘Pillbox’ he crept forward under a shower of enemy hand grenades and assisted a man onto the roof of the ‘Pillbox’ which was then bombed and the garrison were captured. When all of the officers had become casualties and the line was endanger of being driven in, with great coolness he held onto the ground gained and sent valuable information, on his own initiative.

He set a magnificent example of courage and resources.
