Unit # Kent Regt., Black Watch - Royal Highland Regiment of Canada

Pte. A former resident of Chatham. He was living with Mr. and Mrs. J. C. McLean of 468 King St. West and was a member of the Kent Regt.  He was employed at the Chatham Malleable & Steel Co.  He had enlisted in Toronto and went overseas with the Black Watch (Royal Highland Regiment) of Canada.

He was married to Miss Janet Goldie (RN) at Medicine Hat, AB. It was to his wife that the telegram “Officially reported that Eric had been killed in action in France.”  He was 30 years old at the time of his death. (DOD 21/07/44)

The Brantford Expositor news reported, “ Pte. Eric Wakely is officially reported as having been killed in action in France, according to word received by his wife, the former Miss Janet Goldie RN.

He was well known in the Brantford area and in Chatham where he was a member of the Park Baptist Church and the YMCA. A brother Ralph was in the RCAF in NFLD and Jack and two sisters Ruth and Jean.
