A single labourer living in Kent Co. Attestation: 3/11/1914. Age: 26 yrs. 2 mos., Height: 5’ 6 ½”, Girth: 37”, Complexion: Dark, Eyes: Gray, Hair: Black. Medical exam : “Fit” 3/11/1914.

It was reported that William was treated for Epilepsy and admitted to 14 General Hospital. He was treated for his condition and discharged 12/01/16. Classified as ”Unfit”. Never the less he rejoined his unit 12/01/15 

William was Killed in Action 26/03/16.  

It is reported in a letter from Capt. Stewart McKeough to his father dated 3/05/16, that William, “was killed by a shell the night of the coy. Went into the trenches. He was one of the steadiest and most popular men in my company.” McKeough goes on to mention Williams brother “Lance Corporal Harry Whittington who is in the Coy., although I believe they enlisted in Sarnia, had relatives in Chatham and while in London always went to Chatham when on pass. “McKeough Letters” at page 358.

He was eligible for the 1914 – 15 Star. His mother Mary, was given the Memorial Cross 22/06/1920 and his father George would have received the plaque and the Scroll.
