Unit # Essex Scottish Regt., 1A District Depot

Born 16 August, 1920 at Mull, Harwich Twsp., Kent County, ON.  The son of Herman Jonathan and Verlie Edna, (nee Pfaff) Woofenden.. The brother of Francis Henry, other siblings include: Stanley, Edna Fern, Evelyn, Thomas, Alfred, Verlie Jean, Margaret Rose and Frederick. The husband of Connie. Prior to his enlistment he was employed with the Michigan Central Railroad at Windsor, ON.    

Richard enlisted in Windsor with the Essex Scottish 10 October, 1941 as a Private. In Unit #1A District Depot. By all accounts, “Dick’ was of a cheerful disposition and “a pleasure to know”.  

He was severely wounded in action 8 August,1944 in the area of Caen, France. He receives shrapnel wounds to his chest and spine leaving him a paraplegic 

He would be discharged 13 November, 1945. He was shipped back to Canada and was sent to Sunnybrook hospital in Toronto. Meanwhile his parents built an addition to their home in Comber, in Essex County, to accommodate Dick and his wheelchair. Once back in his home he learned to drive a manual drive vehicle. Hi military records revealed that he was interested in sign painting, coin collecting and playing a mouth organ. He was also a keen fisherman and he enjoyed home-made cherry pie. 

He was a member of the Comber Branch No.241 of the Royal Canadian Legion.

Richard passed away 11 April. 1957 and was buried with military honours in the Morpeth Cemetery at Morpeth, Ontario.
