Spr. Regimental number:541056. Reference: RG 150, Accession 1992-93/166, Box: 330-11, Item: 18833, PDF: B033-S011. Date of Birth: 22/06/1895. The son of Mary E. Backus (a widow), mailing address P.O. Box 97, Wallaceburg, ON. William was the Fire Chief in Wallaceburg and single. Attestation 14/12/1915 at #2 District, London, ON.; age 20 years, 5’7”, Canadian Cyclist Corps.

William embarked in Canada for overseas 28/04/16 aboard the S. S. Olympic arrived in England 5/05/16.

While in France he was attached to the 74th Battalion Cdn. Infantry 9/06/16. 11th Brigade – Trench Mortor Battery 25/07/16, 87th Battalion 18/07/16.

13/10/1916 William was admitted to Woolwich Hospital with a sprained left ankle. Transferred to #13. General Hospital Woodcote Park “Royal Herbert” for 8 days and was discharged 20/10/16. He then went to the Cdn. Convolescent Hospital at Epson and released from there 17/11/16. This was not the last He He William was returned to England 11/05/1919 and was admitted to Witley Hospital for a Hernia on his right abdomen 13/05/1919. Released from hospital he was returned to Canada 31/05/1919 aboard the HMTS Mauritania. He was discharged from the Army 8/06/1919 at No.2 District – Toronto, ON. He had spent 3 years, 2 Months and 12 days overseas in England and France.
