The son of Arthur Ernteman of 230 Wellington St. East, Chatham, ON., the brother of Alfred Albert also of the RCA., he also had a sister Elsie at home. James had enlisted in Kingston, ON. and he expected he would have to go there before returning to Chatham.

James had been with the artillery for the past four years. He had been in hospital for some time. He had sent his father a telegram to advise him he was returning to Canada. Due to his injuries he had been given a lowered category. CDN 1/05/44

The CDN 14/10/44(P) reported while in England he married and had a son Norman it was reported she had finally arrived in Chatham.  James had been invalided home in the spring of 1944.
