He was born in Wales and came to Chatham in 1937. Ernest was employed at the International Harvester plant on Grand Ave. in Chatham prior to his enlistment. His mother had settled in New Brunswick and he had a brother Harry in Blenheim. Prior to his arrival in Canada he had served eight years in the British Army serving in Egypt, Africa, Palestine and Hong Kong.   

Ernest enlisted in the Canadian Armed Forces in September of 1939. He tried to join the RCAF but was discharged honorably, he then joined the Canadian Army and spent three and a half years overseas.

He was serving in Italy when he was wounded by a land mine. Due to his injury it meant he was relieved from further service. After his return to Chatham one day, “unobserved by the general public” CDN 30/10/44. He was quick to pickup his job at the International Harvester plant.
