Born in Windsor, ON. The son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Robert Horne. The father of Patricia of Detroit. The brother of Mrs. Frank Keller of Detroit and Mrs. Charles Mayfield of Wallaceburg and two brothers James of Windsor and Arnold of Pennsylvania  He spent his early years in Windsor before moving to Charing Cross, Kent Co., ON.

Russell worked on a number of farms. He was an early enlistment in the Canadian Army and proceeded overseas. While in England he was severely wounded from a bomb. He was invalided back to Canada but never fully recovered from the effects of his injuries. 

He had a son Russell Jr. who was training for a paratrooper in the US. Army. He was fatally injured while training in Alabama, USA. Married to Marjorie Caren.

Interment at Evergreen Cemetery. Legion members acted as pallbearers.
