Regimental number: 880729. Reference: RG 150 Accession 1992-93/166, Box ????. Date of Birth: 12/05/1895 at Howard Twsp., Kent Co., ON. The son of Jessie A. Turner living at Bickfor, ON [later found at Brigden, ON. 6/02/1918]. A single mail carrier in Fletcher, Howard Twsp Twsp, Kent Co., ON. Attestation: 25/04/16, at Chatham, ON., age 21 years, 5’ 5 ¾”, he had an appendix scar on his lower abdomen. Enlisted to the 186th overseas battalion, CEF.

Pte. Gordon James Turner, 880739 (born 5/12/1895 in Bickford Ont. From Fletcher, Ont. Joined the 186th Infantry Battalion of the Can. Expeditionary Force which was formed in Chatham, Ontario – April Ontario. He left with his battalion for France, and in late 1917 we was encamped in Contes. 

It so happened that his story seems to have been misplaced – Sorry for the missed enlistment. 

Shipped out of Halifax, NS. aboard the S. S. Lapland 28/03/17 arriving in England 7/04/1917.

Pte. Turner would go through the usual training in the 4th Reserve Batt. at Connaught and Aldershot in preparation for transfer ‘overseas’ to France. His service would be with the 18th Batt., CEF. He did not go for long in active service in France before hospitalized 4/11/17 at Estaples suffering from a Gastric Ulcer.  

He did recover enough to be reassigned to 14 Canadian Machine Gun Company. It is not indicated that he served again at the front.

19/10/18 would find himself in 18 General; hospital at Cammiers, reported, with a Gastric ulcer again. Gordon would work his way through a chain of hospitals No. 6 – Estaples, No.5 Convalescent Hospital – Depot, Cayeun before being discharged 17/11/18.

Gordon returned to Canada aboard the H.M.T. “Carona embarked 25/06/1919 for demobilization.

Gordon James Turner passed away 6 April, 1943.
